The days of boring celebrations with the usual cookie-cutter party trimmings and goodies are history. With the innovations in party planning which involve out-of-the-ordinary party themes come one-of-a-kind party favors. Surely, party favors of boring pen holders in ribboned bags can now retire.

In 2008, 25 year old graphic designer Jayne Ong was one of the many innovators who broke the mold of old boring party give-aways by launching Mushpomato, an online store selling custom-made polymer clay accessories. Polymer clay, made from polyvinyl chloride or PVC, is a non-toxic material that is widely used on various constructions and comes in different colors, textures and effects. Its malleable quality and a wide array of colors to choose from makes it perfect for craft and prop making.

Ong first began making polymer clay accessories for individual customers and later was commissioned to do bulk orders for parties. Her latest party favor design was a “fairy cupcake” for her client’s daughter’s Tinkerbell-themed 1st birthday. “It took me less than a week to bake, paint, drizzle silver dusts over these lovelies,” Ong said. “But all work was paid off when [my client] told me her guests love the “cupcakes” that I made.”

Ong’s top selling designs are what she calls ‘food designs’ or miniature polymer clay imitations of cupcakes, fruits, doughnuts and candies. Apart from her popular food designs, Ong also draws her inspiration from cartoon characters, nature, and eccentric flights of fancy and fashions these bright ideas to key chains, lockets and various jewelry items such as rings, bracelets, earrings and even watches.

Ong’s polymer clay accessories, especially her unique food designs, are realistic, vividly colored and lifelike which especially add to its marketability.
