The Perfect Christmas Wedding

The Christmas holidays are always a perfect time to be with friends and family. Aside from it being an opportunity to hold gatherings and reunions, Christmas is also a perfect time to spread cheer through the spirit of sharing. Of course, having a Christmas wedding is no different, the event itself being an opportunity to spread the best gift of all — love.

Save the date

If you're planning a wedding scheduled for the holidays, it helps to give out your invitations in advance—way before everyone else makes their own plans for the holidays. Ten months to a year before the wedding date is a good enough allowance, just to make sure that your guests can make travel arrangements for the busy holidays.

Invitations

Since your wedding will be playing along with a holiday theme, it would be great to be able to incorporate certain holiday icons into the invitations as well. However, you should also make sure that your invitation doesn't come off as a Christmas greeting card. Try to strike a balance between a holiday celebration and a wedding--you can put in some snowflakes, poinsettias, bells or mistletoes, just make sure that you don't overdo the Christmas theme.

Winter Wonderland

The holidays should also provide you a chance to play around with certain timeless themes and tweak them a bit to suit your preferred style. A dominantly white theme is not only fitting for an elegant Christmas wedding ceremony, but also for a winter wonderland theme. At the venue of the ceremony, deck the halls (or aisles?) with white flowers like lilies, with pine cones inserted into the bouquet. It would also help to install tall candles in the flower centerpieces to make for a more ceremonial feel. For the bridal and bridesmaids bouquet, group some white lilies and tie them up with a silver bow. To complete the holiday theme of the ceremony, have the flower girls throw white flower petals during the wedding march to simulate falling snow.

Reception

At the reception, you can add ice sculptures to the buffet table. The same lilies can be used as flower centerpieces for the venue, as well as on the dinner tables. To create an ambience of a festive dinner for this holiday theme, place candles on the tables, along with scattered white or silver confetti and a few tinsels. You can also add some wreaths to go with the flower centerpieces. White lanterns, stars or snowflakes can also be hung from the ceiling on red or royal blue ribbons.

Tree of greetings

You can also create a “message tree”, by putting up a silver Christmas tree at the reception venue, decorated with just a few ornaments (navy blue Christmas balls would go well with the silver branches), and beside it, a basket full of blank cards, with a ribbon attached to each. Guests can write their wedding (and holiday) wishes on the cards and then hang them on the tree.

Edible snow

For the cake, a simple, white tiered fondant cake would be perfect for a Christmas themed wedding. Embellish the smooth fondant surface with snowflakes or different sizes. For the cake itself, or the layer underneath the fondant, have your baker add some Christmas flavors like cinnamon, nutmeg, and maybe even fruitcake.

Christmas dinner

For a Christmas wedding, it would be ideal to have the reception in the evening and create the feel of a traditional Christmas dinner. Dinner menu items can include Christmas dinner favorites such as roast turkey, roast beef, dinner rolls, honey glazed ham, chestnuts, butternut squash pie and gingerbread cookies. Of course, the menu will vary depending on what is considered traditional in your hometown.

Holiday gifts

Christmas or plain white scented candles are perfect for a wedding giveaway. Ideal scents for the holidays would be cinnamon, cinnamon apple, nutmeg, pine, holly berry, citronella, lavender and chamomile. Scented handmade soaps are also a great idea. Wrap these lush bath bars with ornate Christmas wrapping paper and tie them with a silver ribbon. A jar of gingerbread cookies is also ideal, and can be enjoyed by the whole family, including the kids. If you want to opt for a more varied and traditional Christmas gift for your guests, you can also create a Christmas basket with different types of holiday treats such as a small piece of ham, bread, cookies, candy canes, fruits, wine and chocolate.

A Christmas themed wedding should be a great and meaningful event to plan, especially since the holidays themselves are already a perfect opportunity for family and good friends to get together. Also, since the holidays also allows for people to take a vacation from work and enjoy their time with their loved ones, it should be easy to get everyone in a festive mood. Cheers to the holidays and the perfect Christmas wedding!
