Lessons In Luck

EIGHT-WAY RUN. The Ba Gua (literally meaning "eight symbols" is a fundamental symbolic concept that greatly influences many areas of Chinese culture, such as martial arts and feng shui.

There are very many beliefs surrounding luck every time Chinese New Year is about to begin. Feng Shui is one of those concepts that teaches on how one could gain luck by balancing the qi (pronounced 'chi', flow of energy) in your home.

Feng Shui, also known as Kan-Yu means ‘The Law of Heaven and Earth’. This also literally means “wind and water”. Water (shui) is the sustainer of life without which nothing can exist. The movement of air (feng), acts as a carrier for the water and is equally essential to survival. The principles of Feng Shui aim to regulate the qi by promoting harmony between the yin (negative) and yang (positive) energies.

Because of the strong presence of Chinese culture in the Philippines, many Filipinos believe in the concepts and philosophies of Feng Shui, one of which is the use of charms to gain luck. This is most evident in the homes and establishments of entrepreneurs. Now that the Year of the Earth Rat is about to begin, many homes and businesses are using these charms to control the qi in hopes of having a better year than the last.

According to Feng Shui experts and practitioners, proper placement of the following charms in your home or business establishment could bring in more luck in love and business:

  • Wind Chimes

These must be positioned where they will move and give a resonating sound. They vibrate the air to stimulate and cleanse the qi. The best chimes have six to nine rods.

  • Water Features

LET IT FLOW. Fountains can control qi when placed at the right location.

The element of water either activates or slows down qi. Certainly, you can use water features at home or in your work stations and ,depending on where they are placed, will have different effects on the flow of energy. These water features could either be an aquarium, a fountain, or even paintings of bodies of water. Those wanting to have more wealth and luck on their business should consider putting water features on the southeast area of the room, while those looking for good health should put theirs on the east side.

  • Bamboo Flutes

A potent Chinese symbol that drives away evil spirits and promotes good luck. They are usually hung with red tassels or ribbons on both sides with the mouthpiece more elevated than the root end. The nodes of the flute give the qi some extra energetic push, thus surrounding your area with dynamic energy that wards off evil spirits.

  • Coins

UNIVERSAL TRUTH. More money, more wealth.

Coins symbolize prosperity and attract wealth. The square hole in the center of the coin represents the earth, which is surrounded by the metallic circle that represents the qi surrounding the earth. These coins (usually three) can be tied together by a red ribbon and placed in your bag, wallet, or account books.

  • Pair of Mandarin Ducks

These symbolize happiness in love and relationships. Those looking to attract a new partner should place the ducks facing each other, while those wishing for a stable and long-lasting relationship with their partners can simply place the ducks beside each other.

  • Crystals

SHINING ENERGY. Crystals activate the yang of the energies that pass through its facets.

They are more often used in the south-west, north-east or center. Crystals support and disperse natural light and hence have an uplifting effect on the energies, activating the yang and reflecting it outwards. Putting a crystal in the living room or south-west area of the house can enhance relationships, while putting them on the eastern side activates the qi to promote successful career prospects.

However, no matter how well we place these charms in our homes (or whether you believe in them or not), luck would never come to us if we're just going to depend on the flow of qi outside us. What really matters is what flows inside us.

Always be ready to face new challenges, be careful in making your decisions, and don't be afraid to take risks, whether it be in business, love, or life in general. As the old saying goes, "Fortune favors the bold." it sure helps to know that you have luck on your side because of the charms, but in the end, it is you who really controls the qi to your happiness.
